Blog - Choosing the Right Medicare Plan

Knowledge is Power!

Insurance shouldn’t be confusing and neither should your questions. Our blog is here to make it all easier, one post at a time. From understanding personal insurance basics to exploring your options, we’ll break down the topics that matter most to you.

Understand Your Two Main Paths

When you first become eligible, you generally choose between two primary ways to receive your benefits:

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B): This is a fee-for-service program run by the federal government. You can visit any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Many people choose to add a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy to help pay for out-of-pocket costs like coinsurance and deductibles, along with a separate Part D plan for prescription drugs.

Medicare Advantage (Part C): These are all-in-one, "bundled" plans offered by private insurance companies. They typically include hospital, medical, and prescription drug coverage. These plans often provide extra benefits—such as dental, vision, or hearing coverage—but may require you to use a specific network of doctors and facilities.

Key Factors for Your Decision

As you compare your options, consider these four pillars:

Doctor Networks: If you have preferred physicians, verify whether they are "in-network" for the plans you are considering. With Original Medicare, you have more flexibility, whereas Medicare Advantage plans usually focus on provider networks.

Prescription Drugs: Each plan has a "formulary," which is a list of covered medications. Check this list to ensure your current prescriptions are covered and see how they are tiered by cost.

Total Costs: Don't just look at the monthly premium. Consider deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Medicare Advantage plans include an annual "maximum out-of-pocket" limit, which can provide financial predictability.

Lifestyle Needs: If you travel frequently, consider how a plan handles coverage outside of your home area or even internationally.

If you feel overwhelmed, remember that you don’t have to navigate this alone. You can go to Medicare.gov to compare options in your area, or reach out to a local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for free, unbiased counseling. Taking the time to evaluate your health needs today ensures you have the right support for tomorrow.
